Gaday - I need some help with a Shopsmith 10E

I joined this forum last night when I found it was the source of some good information about the Shopsith 10E.

For as long as I can remember, my father had a Shopsmith 10E in his workshop. As close as I can figure it, he bought it in late 1947 or early 1948 at it is Serial number 2445 from the San Francisco plant but was assembled in Australia under license by a company in Guildford NSW.

I grew up knowing how to convert it from a bench saw to a drill press which were the two most common uses it was put to.

Since his passing in 1997 I have used it as a bench saw only and now don't really have the space for it. So I am looking for advice as to how best to find a new home for this excellent machine.

As far as I can workout, the only thing I am missing is the Key for the Jacobs Chuck but I suspect that could be easily replaced, I just have not tried.

The unit is in working order and given its age is in excellent condition. actually it is doing better than I am and I am more than a few years younger.

Having spent a few hours cleaning it up and getting all the accessories together I am wondering why I am selling it, you are just not going to buy something this solid and reliable these days.

Your best bet would be to advertise it in the forum market place. The rules state that you must put a price and what that would be I have no idea. I would put it at a price that you think is fair and maybe make it negotiable. There are plenty of forumites that are into old stock like this so you never know someone might be interested. Hi, I have just joined the group as well. I also have a Shop Smith 10ER which my Dad bought new in 1952. An Australian Made machine as far as I know some parts were bought in and others were made here. There appears to be a few subtle differences between the the aussie and American machines. I would encourage you to keep it you may regret it later on. I'm 54 and I have no intentions of getting rid of mine until I can no longer use it. The Shop Smith has its limitations but it can do many things and once you are use to it it can do them quite well. What ever you decide I wish you well. Cheers David

I want to open a woodworking museum in the next year or so. I have 10 lathes already and some other equipment. I may be interested especially if you can provide a little more information about its use etc. I've got one already with all the accessories and I think I paid $100.
