Just on the subject of increasing your ability to perform the splits, it is normally only the ligaments that restrict your leg movements so it very possible, as you have found, that you would be able to do increase your suppleness if you wish. However you must do it slowly over a longish period and be gentle (on yourself): Rough as you like with others!

My mother was naturally flexible and I can remember her doing the splits in her seventies, yet I couldn't touch my toes without a great deal of warming up.

If it was me I would require a big bloke on each leg but I would be in constant fear that one would call out to the other,
