U beaut water Dyes

I have the pack of U beaut water dyes and I have a small job coming up that has some colour match ups to do.

That is not normally a problem for mw because I believe I can match up ok. without doing any research yet i know that I will have to find a white dye because the piece to be matched has a yellow pink hue through it and, without experimenting yet I doubt mixing the yellow with the red or orange will give me the colour I need. the U beaut dye pack does not have white in it.

I think a touch of white to the red will give me that pink hue and then blended with the yellow to tone in with what I require.

Does anybody know how I can get a white dye to blend in. I believe Neil's dye is a food based dye so that might be a lead.

To my knowledge there is no such thing as a white water dye. Try using very weak solution of dye and water to get what you are after. If the timber is dark then it's a waste of time trying to dye it.

However. On white-wood a very weak solution of red will give you a pink. the same thing with the yellow. The dye can be mixed down to 1000 parts water to 1 of dye and still give ever so slight and subtle colour changes.

Try very small mixes starting with 1 dye to 10 water and add 10 more water till you get what you are looking for. You will need a piece of timber the same as what you intend to dye, to experiment on and allow each experiment to dry before moving on to the next as the drying can often make a major difference to the final colour, so can putting a finish over it.

Ideally you try, dry and apply (a finish) before moving on to the next test.

I thought as much, and that's why I asked here hoping you would chime in. I had a feeling that the yellow and red watered down might go close but thought I would ask first.

Will have a play possibly this weekend and if close will put photo of original and my attempt. I think I will come up with a close enough match.

I can't remember who made them, but I do have a white water dye as part of a set I bought some years ago. Not that' it's very good and me being in UK I doubt you'd be able to get the same in Aus.

However I'm answering this thread to suggest a visit to an art store, Titanium white is available as a soluble powder and may be the substance your looking for as a lightener to your other stains.

I will try to get some and try out. It will find some other uses in the shed I am sure.
