advice needed on light/heat transfer of polycarbonate sheeting

Hi all, I am in coastal Vic, so crazy cold in winter (which seems to be 8 months of the year), and can get toasty in summer too. I have an awning at the front door (we just built it) and am trying to choose which type/colour of polycarb roofing to use. My mate who is a plumber recommends using anything but the clear as we live on a dirt road and he reckons it will always look dirty, but after researching on the web, I feel like what we want is shelter from the rain, but also in winter it is our only north facing area of deck and so we huddle there to get some morning winter sun, as well as near the window (inside). So my theory is that we dont want to block any available light or heat by choosing one of the other options (greys, opals, bronzes etc), which all have diminished heat/light properties. I know mostly people want to reduce glare and keep the area cool, but we actually want it to be a bit of a sun trap. Does anyone have any experience with polycarb light/heat stuff, or suggestions to make? Are they heaps warmer than open air areas, no matter what tint? Id be very grateful if you could help me make my decision!!
