Short Surnames Rule

Found this in the SMH Letters page today:

my surname meets the requirements though might fall down on my 3 syllable first name ( perhaps not having a middle name would make up for that though )

But don't you have to get yourself elected to parliament first ? I believe as a Dual National I'm ineligible to stand for election and I can't see me renouncing my British Citizenship in order to enter the fray ( though the superannuation benefits are very tempting and they seem to have very long holidays).

Nah, you dont want it, you might end up with pancreatitis, which is a short name for "I'm sick of every man and his dog picking on me". :D

Well, you're just going to have to decide what you want to be, wont you? Try supporting the Australian cricket team, that would be a good start ;) As for getting elected to parliament, that's just a technicality. I wouldn't let that stand in my way if I wanted the job.

That letter-writer's facts are wrong; he has obviously forgotten about Billy McMahon; I suppose you could argue that his name only has two syllables when spoken, but when written it has three. Admittedly, he was not one of Australia's most distinguished Prime Ministers, being principally remembered for his jug ears, and general incompetence.

By the way, knowing your surname, I think you would have zero chance :D Nor would I, for that matter :)

All of the above reasons Rocker but he is remembered mostly for his wife's dresses with splits going all the way to the top floor. :D Lovely view when she came down the stairs at the White House on their visit to Seppo land. :D

I think that maybe 90% of the population has a surname of less than 3 syllables which makes prime ministers obviously very representative of the population as a whole.

i qualify with the surname, but fall short in the area of being a Richard Cranium and the ability to avoid giving an answer to a question :D

I only have one syllable in my last name and only four letters!!! I reckon that I could work out the rorts quicker than most. This is the first thing that Politicians are taught when they enter the home of rorts in Canberra.
And, boy Oh Boy! don't they learn quick.
Our local bloke knows all the tricks and he is only a state rep.:mad:
