Insulating a weatherboard California bungalow

Hi,

I want to install insulation in my old California bungalow. The weatherboards are in ok shape but we need to change a few that are rotten and the house needs repainting. Also I am changing the windows.

I have looked an pumping rockwool into the cavity but I am not sure of the efficacy of this method.

I suspect to do it properly would be to remove the weatherboards and install batts and/or foil. This is obviously costly but I suspect the only way to guarantee the insulation is effective.

Another option I have considered is to install another weatherboard skin on top of the old forming a new cavity and installing foil before doing that.

Is this last option viable? Anybody has done this or has a good reason not to do it?
