Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit

Hello All,

We've got a wonderful noise generator down the side of our house (also known as a A/C unit) that I'm does my head in every time I turn it on, can't help but think that I'm annoying the neighbours with the thing :(.

I've called a local Air Conditioning company and asked if it is possible to just get the outdoor unit replaced for a smaller, quieter one but they told me the whole thing would need to be replaced (indoor and outdoor). Just want check if this is the case before I make a decision on what to do with it.
