Good Evening Friends,
For safety sake why would one NOT leave the radial arm saw running when putting another board upon the saw table?

Respectfully, :)

For safety's sake you have either:
a) sold the mongrel thing to some other sucker :(
b) relegated it to anchor duties for your tinny
c) dumped the mongrel thing because you could't find anybody silly enough to make "a" possible and "b" was not an option because you didn't want to frighten the fish.
c) none of the above, you actually use the thing and not wishing to accidently poke a new piece of stock into the spinning blade as the useless and cumbersome fence system (which BTW doesn't really work) won't prevent this happening you religiously shut the mongrel thing down between each cut (and in the silence dream about a SCMS or a real panel saw).

Mick (PS anyone want to buy a RAS?)

Historically, this is the time when young children and thespians have thrown themselves onto the spinning blade. They are aware that during the time when your attention is distracted with the placement of the new board is the optimum time to indulge in this activity and they do so with relish. Many are the times when I have had to pick pieces of piccaninny from the far wall where they have been turned into a slurry.
Nobody has yet come up with a reasonable explanation as to why they indulge in this bizarre behaviour.
Thespians are also known to like indulging themselves in this act. It is thought that in their case it is merely an attention seeking behaviour.

Good Evening Friends,
Many a body part has flown as Bob Wilson stated and it is completely uncalled for as the safest method is to shut down between each cut.

However, there are those who will allow the tool as well as the table saw to continue to run between each board. The danger lies with the blade spinning toward the front or the new board and when the saw drifts toward the board it can and will catch it and before you can bat an eye it has run across the board to the end of the arm and cut anything in it's path.

I have seen many a body part lost as a result of this same action.

OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Association) here in the United States demands that a return spring be installed on the radial arm saw in commercial areas, such as lumber yards or Vocational schools.

Thank you for your support.

Respectfully, :)
