When adjusting the board (cardboard filter you tore off the cig pack) on a joint(er) it is best to use sharp scissors. Blunt scissors or a knife will crush the rolled board and render it useless.
It is really for asthetic reasons that the board should be trimmed on the joint to minimise overhang of the tally-ho (rollie paper), however, more practicaly, it also stops the board being dragged out of the joint, having stuck to your lip, and ruining the roll-up.

One of you had the correct answer, and yes I imagine that we might have some weird terms compared to yours but they mean the same.
The correct answer is by adjusting the infeed table of the jointer, to change the depth of cut on a board.
