View Full Version : Removing scratches and hollows from recently sanded floors

Hi all,

Just joined up today after reading many threads on this forum over the past few months.

I have no idea what type of timber my floors are. It is reddish brown in colour and similar to Kempas, but a bit darker. I believe it was a set of pre-finished, tongue and groove floorboard only installed between 3-8 years ago (by my estimate).

I've recently had the floors sanded by drum (40, 60 and 100 grit papers) and circular edge sander (just 40 grit), and it wasn't done correctly.

As a result, I've got a combination of the following:

1. Minor spots where the drum has touched the parts of the main floor, leaving slight (0.5 to 1mm) hollows
2. Deeper hollows due to the drum sander being reversed backwards after sanding up to the wall (it wasn't lifted as it approached the wall)
3. Deep circlular scratches near some edges (about 10 to 15cm from the wall) due to the edge sander (maybe it wasn't feathered correctly?)

My question is, it is possible to repair these hollows and scratches without having to do the whole floor again?

I reckon (from what I've read on forums etc.) that a lot of the circular scratches will be removed with 80 grit then 120 grit paper in a standard rectangle electric sander along the grain.?

With fixing or feathering out the hollows, I'm not so sure how to go about doing it.

I know that many advise professionals to do it, and I'm aware that would have been the best long term option, but I'd like to keep the cost down if possible for the repairs and its is not really an option now. My budget is tight in these economic times!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Dan
