sun proof cover ? [Archive]

Hi all,

I have a question. I am looking for covers that will protect my caravan and car from the sun and would also be waterproof. Shop bought car covers in my limited experience don't last, nor do plastic tarps. deals direct ahve a 12X9 canvas tarp for $60 delivered, which is cheap, but I don't know what life to expect from it. The covers will be in use pretty much all day every day. A sheet of UV proof plastic would do as I can organise tiedown myself.

So to the collective wisdom: any suggestions ?

G'day Damina,

When I lived in Newcastle for a few years, I used one of those waterproof silver fabric car covers, the type you buy from Auto Pro and the like to protect my car from the salt spray that always blew over.

It worked very well. It wasn't waterproof at all, but it kept the car cooler and stopped the salt.

I no longer use it, but I used it daily for 4 years.

The sort of cover Waldo mentions need to be tied properly or heavy wind will shift them

Also you could waterproof them with a silicone spray. Just don't get the spray on your Duco.

Never had to tie it and it was about 3km in a straight line from Newcastle and Nobby's beach when parked. If you buy the cover for the right size car with the elastic around it, then it'll be pretty secure. :2tsup:

It's really up to you if it looks robost and durable and won't tear if a breeze blows,
It should be good. it's a bit like a tarp you get what you pay for.

Damian,
Not saying this will happen ... BUT.. if you are not careful with the selection of material that comes into contact with the vehicle you are trying to protect you could end up with damage to the paint work as a result of chaffing, especially on sharp bends and curves in the panels

What ever you choose it will move about in the wind and, even if you do get a nice soft material, the accumulation of dirt and grime will do damage in time.

I have seen this damage occur as a result of one of those "car-bras" on a very expensive Porsche
