Paint over vinyl wrap

Hello all

Has anyone had any luck applying a painted finish over the top of furniture that is viynl-wrapped? A good sealer such as Zinsser would probably be a good start but I'm not sure if the overall result would stand up to any sort of wear & tear. Any comments?

I've used leather paint on vinyl shoes and it seemed to work ok.

I've used preloved vinyl wrapped chipboard for shelves, walls and drawers for use in my workshop.

I just painted them with ordinary (read cheapest, about 4 30 a tin, from Bunnings) undercoat and topcoat. The really dark brown or black chipboard (so favoured in tv cupboards and stands) require 2 or 3 coats but then it's fine.

So if you use better paint you should have no trouble.

There is paint made speciffically for painting vinyl called "vinyl paint."

This is available from manufactuers who make automotive paint. Dupont,and PPG can both help you. There are other makers, some auto stores used to carry a full tinting system so you could ask for any colour which they made up n the spot. Not sure if anyone near you would still have this available .Repco was one of them. There is also pressure pack cans.

Like most things these products come and go depending on demand. Present trends means most people don't keep their cars and redo them they just sell or trade off.

Vinyl roofs and upholstery were often changed. the paint needs no primers the colour has good coverage and is sprayed straight over the surface. Its very thin and has to be applied wet so that you get a smooth surface as you are not supposed to sand or polish it. It is designed to work on flexable surfaces such as seats so it has excellent wear properties. On a vinyl car roof the vinyl material fails before the actual colour.

If you can find a refinisher who uses Dupont their system consists of a vinyl base material which you add tinters to. depending on how much you intend to paint and what budget you consider Ok you could possibly purchase the base from Dupont and have the local user mix up material for you as they probably won't keep it in stock themselves.

Be careful if the vinyl surface has been in use around a house where the house wife could attack it, it may be saturated in silicone which will present a lot of extra problems.
