That would be the callous that forms on your forehead when you keep falling down after drinking a case of beer.

In metalworking, it's hardening the outside of an iron piece by heating it in a carbon-rich medium such as leather or sawdust. In timber, its the outside hardening of kiln-dried timber while the inside is still softer & moister.

Generally caused by transporting uncovered timber on open trucks.

Good Morning Friends,
Case hardening is a defect in the lumber caused by improper drying. Case Hardening is caused when a board is dried too fast. the outer layers in a case hardened board are compressed while the inner layers are in tension.

You could be right judging by some of the timber I have had from suppliers.

Once upon a time I lived near a pine mill. After the timber was milled, they kept the moisture content constant by spraying it with water. Nowdays, they wrap it in plastic before it gets a chance to dry out. Is it any wonder it does what it does!
