View Full Version : query on search function

Just wondering if there is a reason that three letter words cannot be used in the search function. For example ELU ROUTER and BOX JOINTS are just two searches that you might reasonably want to do, but three letter words are ignored.

The search function on the forum doesn't do AND's correctly. I always use google to search the forum; try this (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=box+joints+site%3Awww.woodworkforums.com&btnG=Google+Search&meta=) one out Michael for box joints. You can then apply it to anything you want to search for.

Point conceded.
Just tried a search on "Box Joint Jig"
I basically got today's posts
Checking further

I'm sure you'll find that it isn't discriminating against three letter words. It's just pulling up so many results with just 'joint' & with just 'box'. Any search that doesn't do an AND search is next to useless. The other thing too is that the search orders by most recently posted instead of relevance. I feel your pain Michael!

WILL

if you put in "box joint" it will only come up with results containing both words together

Don't think so Carl; here's a search for box joint which comes up with one of your threads and i can't find the word box in it anywhere.... http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=90182&highlight=box+joint. The only reason it was included in the search results was because it has the word 'joint' in one of the posts

I was looking for a thread I started a few years ago. The title is "I must be mad". So I entered the word mad as part of the title and the wongo as creator of the thread. I got nothing.

As has been said, using Google Search for 3 letter words, or indeed any tricky search, is a better option.

You can either type in site:woodworkforums.com or go to Advanced Google Search, which will give you this option as well as some others.

Or, as Carl has said, combine the 3 letter words with another relevant word, such as Elu Router, surrounded by quotes "Elu Router", that way the forum search does an AND search.

There have been several discussions on this in the past (do a search:D)

Hi there

If I search "box joint" I don't see the above page in the results.

If I search box joint I see the above post in the results. I also get a lot of pages that contain either box or post within them.

I'm pretty sure everything is working as it would be expected.

Listen big boy,

We are talking about forum search here, so don’t drag us to your google search.

Why aren’t 3 letter words good enough? If no, why doesn’t it say so instead of saying no items matched.

Because the first returns results that contain box joint

The second should return results that contain either box or joint.

The results returned are quite different.

Btw, by typing your keywords into Google, then adding

site:www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au

at the end, it restricts google to the WWF forums.

Nice pickup, google finds 335 results. I'm not sure why our SE isn't finding results with this query, there are some obvious results containing your query within the post title.

Leave it with me and I'll look into it.

I made a searchplugin for firefox, it may work on other browsers, I think it is opensearch compliant.

Just rename the file as ubueat.xml and save it in your 'searchplugins" directory (most probably 'program files/mozilla firefox/searchplugins'.
Then restart firefox.

The other thing too is that the search orders by most recently posted instead of relevance.

Hi Will. Have you tried setting 'sort results by' to 'relevancy' and then hitting the 'save search preferences' button on the search page? The same thing used to drive me nuts until I saved relevancy as my default preference.

Wossit supposed to do, bh? I didnt look too hard, but the search function seems as silly as ever, so I still often have to do what Groggy does and use a "site:woodwo...." search in google.
