We need a new bed. The moldy futon will finally leave the building ........we hope.:C But what to get? I have this fantasy of a mattress that is good for him on one side, and good for me on the other. :dreaming: as we both have sore backs and necks, but in differant ways. And of course he is a bit heavier than me. Was looking at "beds for backs". (http://www.beds4backs.com.au/index.aspx)
What do others have? Any recommendations? Or definite no-nos?

I haven't taken a lot of notice but recently a TV advert has been showinig a "dial up" mattress with side-by-side settings - exactly what you described. The only info I recall is that they are available at 'selected' Harvey Normans stores.

Check this:
http://catalogues.harveynorman.com.au/portal/dynamiccatalogue?CatalogueID=1186513245247&pageview=two
see the "bonus" and the "2/3 sleeps" branded items - too small for me to read.
Oops ....... pages 10 and 11.

I could make a cheeky remark, but thought the better of it :mods::D:D
We have had a slumberland cushion top matress for about 5 years now and are very happy with it. It is made by select-o-pedic. Ours has independent coils so very little movement is transferred to the other sleeper. It also has bands with different support at the hips shoulders, legs. I good chiropractic pillow also make a huge difference.

We've had a water bed for 14 years (onto the second one now, which we've had for about 8). I hate sleeping on anything else.

Sorry TL can't really help. Have a waterbed (25 years). Just like SilentC can't really get a good nights' sleep on anything else.
Here's a thought. Make your own and use two single mattresses. That way you get what you want and give him what you think he needs. (don't you like that).:U:U:U

Try out a Tempur mattress. Just magnificent for bad backs.
I've had mine for five years.
I think Harvey Norman sell them.

You mean they still make those? I thought that was a fad of the 70' and 80's. :p

.....think I have now made about 10 beds... mixture of double & queens... Oh and about same in singles...
Just a few positives they are so much stronger... you can make them to the height you need... I believe too many people have their bed too low.....
some of my previous post show pictures of the beds I've made...
the other particular reason I love making all my beds....putting in angeline as brackets... once you have a homemade bed.... you might wear out the matteress....but a sollid bed will last a lifetime/ then be pasted on for more use.....

You may do worse than looking at the Dunlopillo range of Latex rubber beds. We purchased a Queen sized one about 10/12 years ago. One of the features we really liked was the ability to adjust each side for each sleeper. Another aspect was the near non-interference of one person to another, unless they move around like an elephant.
The bed also came with a 20 year warranty.
We have been extremely pleased with our bed and I know of two other couples with the same or similar Dunlopillo beds.
Mick.
Ps:- if you require any further information from me, I'm in Germany at the moment and won't be back for another week.

I agree with Mick. Dunlopillo is the final word in beds. Then again, I am also in Germany so maybe you can't trust either of us.
One bed I can rule out for you is the IKEA bed I sleep on at the moment. It's not that old but my wife and I broke it... reading. No realy. Sitting up in bed, the long rail down my side of the bed, (the one that supports the slats) broke in two place and the thin metal angel that supports it folded flat. The mattress is quite comfortable though and if I didn't have to catch the Underground to the hardware store I'd happily make a new frame for it.

Our old mattress gave up the ghost a while back. Now, I like a firm bed for my back and SWMBO likes a soft one. We saw the adverts for the Harvey Norman "Dial a thingy" but a few minutes on Google revealed some very dissatisfied owners. The thing works on a small compressor inflating an airbed to different pressures. Noise becomes a problem in a very short time.
Anyway, an enquiry for a possible solution to our problem in Sleepy's revealed a Sleepmaker bed that can be custom made (at no extra cost) in any of 4 firmness grades on either side. SOLD - her side is a #1 and I have a #3. Purrfek!:2tsup:
It's called a Sleepmaker Select.

The only downside to that system is that you can't do the "recommended" flip and rotate of the mattress - apparently to extend the life of the mattress and reduce any "memory" effect.
TL, you and your partner just need to compromise (by that I mean that he should do what you say - well that's my wifes idea of compromise:roll:).

I went into a latex mattress shop the other day and was told that the latex matresses were not designed to be flipped. The latex is designed to not have a memory effect. (something about the air pockets) Also they were saying that the latex beds are the go for allergies and are mildew and mould resistant.
As for firm/ soft combos, they said that they could make several different types.Oh and you need a good frame as the matresses are heavy.
I was looking at an airbed like the hardly normal ones but now I am leaning away from them. More research needed I think.

Saw a bit of Oprah show the other day some doctor advising do's and don'ts.
He said the bedroom was for only two things, sex was one and i can't for the life of me remember the other one.

Found some reviews from some very unhappy campers (http://www.productreview.com.au/showitem.php?item_id=63008). Maybe only unhappy people write reviews? Also seems like they cost over $3000. A bit out of our price.:C

$3,000 for something you spend one third of your life on, seems like a good investment to me. That's what my Tempur mattress cost. I have never regretted it.

Been looking at those Tempur mattresses too. They are all form aren't they? Just not sure about that. :hmm:
Went to "Beds for Backs 'today and layed around for a while. Sooooooooo Cooooommmmffffyyyyyyy! Then went to lie on some others. Oh dear! Now we REALLY have to get a "Beds for Backs" bed. :C
But even if we order a bed tommorow we have to survive the next month on what we have so we put out our "way past it" futon on top of an air bed. Cool. We just might make it.

Hi Tealady,
Those reviews sound like they bought the air or latex select. Ours is the innerspring version, supremely comfortable and the cost was $1999 including the base and delivery, direct from Sleepys.
