Not patricularly difficult... a few spare sata ports on your motherboard (I just bought a basic board for about $130 that has 6) and then three of these:

(not the absolute cheapest around, but still pretty good)
total cost $490 for the hdds with 3TB storage...
I'm only hovering at just over the 2TB mark at the mo... Media centres chew the space :D

Ozkaban? Looks like you got it. 'Twas a toss up between you and MicD, actually. :D
And yes, it's not hard to get a few Tb in storage nowadays. I upgraded to a new motherboard (Xmas present) and the RAID drivers aren't backwards compatible with the old ones.
To make matters worse, when I installed XP (before I knew it wouldn't detect the drives properly) it automatically validated each drive, preventing me from going back to the old motherboard. (I tried that and the old RAID drivers now show the disks as corrupted. :C)

Oh, and BTW I *never* use RAID at home - I do it at work with enterprise gear but if it goes wrong at home it's game over (as I guess you know!)
