Has anyone been to the Maleny Wood Expo in the past and was it good? I'll be in Bundaberg that weekend and was thinking of going down for a look on sunday or monday. Going by the website it looks like there might be a fair bit of furniture on display which would be my main interest.

Dan,
We have enjoyed spending an entertaining few hours for a couple of years and there has in the past been a wide variety of exhibits. Last year, it seemed to drop off a bit in quality of and in the number of exhibits. We were out and having a lovely breakfast at Randy McGraw's Valley View Woodwork Gallery (http://www.vvwoodwork.com.au/) within an hour of paying our eight bucks, vowing to write to the organisers and all that sort of thing.
This year I will go alone (sigh!) but Mrs Midge has a pre-wedding girly day planned with one of our daughters, and if it turns out no better than last year will probably give it a miss in future.
I understand that Ian Simpson of Maleny TouchWood Gallery (http://www.touchwoodaustralia.com/) will be putting on his own (free) woodturning/equipment demonstrations in conjunction with Gary Pye Woodturning at the Touchwood Gallery, so I'll probably waste a bit more of my life there :D :D on the way back!
Of course there are no shortage of other galleries in the Maleny-Montville-Palmwoods and even if the show doesn't meet your expectations, you'll have a enough to justify a three hour drive!
Hope you aren't at all influenced by the above!!:D
Cheers,
P

Dan,
I go every year or two and propose to go up again this Saturday a.m. Last year I thought it was good value because at the time I was looking for someone with a portable mill and there were several there doing demos etc. Also I sat in on a couple of seminars on hardwood timber species and some other topic can't remember what - seemed to be pretty competent presenters. In the chain-saw-to-fine-furniture spectrum, the show is more oriented to the chain-saw end. This year for the first year they have a box-making competition so the balance may be moving towards the fine furniture end.
I probably won't attend any seminars this year and therefore don't anticipate it will take more than 2 hours to see everything.

Midge,
With 5 weeks off work and a new XR8 falcon ute in the shed it's not too hard to justify the drive. ;)
Ian,
With box making added into the mix I'm fairly certain I'll be there.

I went a couple of years ago and regret very much not buying some of the stuff I saw, then and there. I never seem to get around to it later... There is(was) quite a bit in the way of furniture for sale, as well as the usual tools etc.
Might have to clean out the ute and take it there this year...
