Two Manchurian Pear trees that I planted three months ago are sick and the local nursery has no idea. New leaves cup upward then the edges start to look like they heve been burnt and they die completely:?

You need to water them.

I suspect something in the soil that is being taken up in the water & collecting at the leaf edges during transpiration.
It can be cause by an excess of minerals in the soil or water, you aren't using bore water on them are you?

Cliff, River water. We mixed pig manure with the soli before planting, could this be too rich?
Chinese elms and crab apple trees have flourished in it.

I reckon you don't have the trees planted in enough dirt.
And being manchurian trees they need Chinese dirt, not the Aussie stuff.

Sounds like it could be the problem... something is coming through with the water that is being transpired on the leaves during the hot days.
Try hosing the trees down morning & night, don't do it during the heat of the day unless they are in shade at the time.
Water on the leaves in strong sun light causes problems too.

How can I cure the curling of leaves on my citrus trees? (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081108074210AAJDf81) :D
She of the green thumbs also reckons that while pig manure is good for supplying potassium & nitrogen, it may lead to a magnesium deficiency.
Don't ask me, I got brown thumbs. :- (But that's all I need to turn plants into sawdust. :p)
