How to measure up for a new window

I have a fibro house built in the 60's with timber windows.I need replace one of the windows and I want to put an aluminium slide window in. Is there some where on the net or can anyone tell me how to measure up so I can order a new window? I helped put in a few new windows in a similar sytle house about 6-7 years ago and I cant really remember much about it, but from memory it didnt seem that hard. Any suggestions on what I should or shouldnt do? Thanks
