Hi,<O:p</O:p
I have recently started carving bowls out of Mallee Burls and I am now faced with the dilemma of finishing them. I understand other carvers finish the same type of bowls with just Tung Oil but I would like to achieve a more durable finish and a higher gloss/sheen. I did a test with shellac applied by brush but I got into troubles (it looks like some air got trapped in part of the coat...) and I will have to start again from scratch.<O:p</O:p
I would appreciate any suggestion or the benefit of the experience of somebody who has already gone through the process.<O:p</O:p
Thank you for your time<O:p</O:p
Best regards<O:p</O:p

I reckon a poly/tungoil mixture would suit you. Take a look at this (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=67925) thread (Achieving a Perfect Finish)

Rustin's Danish Oil will bring up the figure nicely and is easy to use; if you want a higher gloss (relatively) more durable finish then try FW Scandinavian Oil.
