Heat Resistant Finish

I'm currently knocking up some 'hot pot stands' for a friend - you know those things that sit on the bench or table then you put a pot or dish on them. Just wondering if anyone has some thoughts about a type of finish which would be a bit durable considering there will be heat involved. Was just thinking some WOP, but I'm not too sure.

Hi Will. I think that you're spot on. I made our kitchen benchtops out of Sheaok about 6 years ago and they haven't suffered once from hot stuff on them. Of course no saucepans or trays out of the oven have ever been put on them without a board underneath, but if it doesn't sizzle when you put it in the sink and drip water on it, it won't hurt the polyurethane.

Have you considered making these stands with an inset tile? I've done things like that. Go and find some fancy ceramic tile and rout out a rebate to receive it. Silicone (the kitchen/bathroom stuff with mould inhibitor) can then fix it in after the surround has been finished in the polyurethane.

Hey Michael, thanks for the thoughts mate :U No I haven't thought of using a tile, but it would be pretty cool. I have access to many different left over tiles from the houses my company builds. May have to try that one out if I make some more of these stands.

I have a board to handle hot pot on the dinner table. I rubbed 1 coat of hard burnishing oil on it but I reckon the oil is only there to make the wood look prettier. In terms of heat resistance, it makes no difference. The wood itself is far more durable.

Yeah that's exactly right Wongo - I just want to put a finish on it for looks more then anything. But then in doing that, just want to make sure the finish will last :U

Here's the hot pot stands. Just whacked on two coats of WOP, for looks more then anything.

In case you were wondering, the two small ones were one big one which I was mucking around with at the start trying to get the design right and I snapped 'er clean in half :)
