If you set your preferrence for Enhanced Interface (WYSIWYG) editing under Miscellaneous Option in your User CP, you can just type the link as you see it: www.google.com (http://www.google.com) and it will automatically become a clickable link.
Alternatively, in the toolbar, you'll see the 'Insert Link' button (the one below the white Smiley face) which if you click on it, you can insert a link at will.
Another method which is useful for inserting an ugly long link is to use a bit of basic code to insert the link with whatever text you choose. For example, if you wanted to insert the link http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=79323 (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=79323) into the word 'here' in the following sentence "Click here to see this thread", you simply place the link between [_URL_=_" and "_] (removing the underscores and leaving no spaces) followed by here and then [_/_URL_] (again, removing the underscores and leaving no spaces).

Thats a good thread maybe it could be moved to the help forum and the heading changed so it can be searched for easily.
