Here's my problem. At present I have a 4M x 120mm gate with a "jockey" wheel and anchored by a 150mm square post.
I intend to replace this gate with double gates of steel (each half weighing approx 35kg) measuring 1940mm x 1100mm.
What size of gate posts should I need assuming each half will have a "jockey" wheel ? My soil is quite stable.

Hi Frank, I would say if you use jockey wheels then good quality Australian hardwood posts of 100mmx100mm would easily be strong enough. The main consideration is burying enough of the post in the ground to prevent it sagging inwards. I would look at putting a minimum of 600-800mm in the ground. If you weren't putting wheels on I'd also suggest that you dig a trench from each post partway towards the other one and put some reinforcing into them and concrete to below the surface.
One other factor in choosing the size of the post is the aesthetic.

Thanks Michael
The post that's in use on the old gate is 150x150 and just for aesthetics I thought I'd try to get a similar one for the other side even tho' it might be over-kill. 600-800 concreted in the ground seems reasonable.
