finish for tea tray

HI All,

I have a piece of ply with she-oak veneer on it. I want to use it for a tea tray. I like the finish that I got on my oak mirror frame with organoil followed by wax. The wood really does have a glow (which I may be imagining is getting better). I am not sure that finish will take the heat and likely spills.

Is there a finish that will let me have my cake and eat it too (or scones in this case)? Or will I have to resort to poly?

Thanks Neil. That will be ieal. I have the polishers handbook (maybe I should read it again). I will need to work on filling the surface of this veneer because it was painted and is now quite roughed up. I will study the handbook for how to achieve this. I also want to do up an oak dining table. I can practise the finish on the tray and advance to the table.

Neil's shellac sounds like good stuff. I used to add small quantities of malamine resin to shellac for polishing dining tables and it was next to bulletproof.

Another (and possibly easier) finish would be the oil you used on your mirror frame, but leave out the final application of wax.
