I suddenly seem to have a number of subscribed threads, to many of which I get instant notifications. I've never subscribed to any threads, so something unexpected seems to have happened. Help!

Go to this page and change your Default Thread Subscription Mode. :2tsup:

Then go to this page & look down the notification column on the 2nd right & select anything that has notification set to instant & then skid down the bottom of the page & changed selected items to No e-mail notification. :2tsup:

It happened to me & I think a few others were mentioning it today too.

Same thing happened to me Alex - I thought I must have had a brainfart when I started getting all these emails so I deleted the threads to which I'd magically subscribed but still a mystery.

There was a forum wide default change, but I think it was reversed. Happened to me but I found a thread that discussed it and offered the solution.
Thought for a monent there I was back in the 70's....

After you changed the notification did you scroll to the bottom of that page and save the changes?

Hi DJ,
I did save the changes but the problem is every new thread I make a post in, it lists it as a subscription and defaults to instant notification.... this problem has only been happening since about 11pm Wednesday night.
I have never subscribed to anything or set instant notification (to my knowledge)
Thanks,
Chipman

And you reckon you've got a problem.
I've been getting hundreds of emails a day bounced back to me from members who've subscribed but haven't updated their email addresses here since changing to a new one.
I have turned the auto subscribe thing off. Thought it had already been done but 400 bounced emails this morning convinced me otherwise.

PS if you want to subscribe to a thread now then you will need to do it manually.

Thanks Neil,
Much appreciated..I was getting worried my email server at school would think that this forum was a source of spam!
This is a great forum and we appreciate what you do very much:2tsup:

It is happening again!
Whenever I make a new post in a thread (one I haven't made a post in before) it creates it as a subscription and defaults to instant notification...
What this means is that if I make a post I have to go to the subscriptions and turn off the instant notification every time!
Cheers,
Chipman

Chipman, have you checked the notification option in the user control panel?
Click on the "Edit Options" link in the control panel, then look for the section titled "Messaging & Notification". In there is an item headed "Default Thread Subscription Mode". Set this to "Do not subscribe", then press the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the form.
I think what happened is that notifications disappeared in the upgrade. Someone then ran a script which set EVERYONE's option to "subscribed", and now we have to unset it manually.
Ron.

Thanks Ron,
That should fix it now!

Neil,
After setting the thread notification to "no email" I am still getting emails. I think it is because of the forum subscription settings I have and I can't find anywhere to switch email notification for forums off. So unscubscribed all forums for the moment.
Cheers

Even after changing the Default Email Notification via your User CP>Edit Options>Messaging & Notification>Default Thread Subscription Mode to Do Not Subscribe or No Email Notification, you'll still need to go User CP>List Subscriptions and then tick all the boxes for the threads that you do not want to get Notifications¹ and then scroll down to the Selected Threads: dropdown box and then select the appropriate action² that you want to apply for the selected threads that you've ticked.
¹Notifications will be set as any of the four below
No email notification
Instant email notification
Daily email notification
Weekly email notification
²Selected Threads can be changed to any of the six below
Move to folder
Delete Subscription
No email notification
Instant email notification
Daily email notification
Weekly email notification

Sorry folks but it's been turned back on again as it is after all the default setting for this and almost all other forums and has been the default ever since we started in 1999.
If you have chanced your settings than you shouldn't have to do it again.... I say shouldn't but I'm really not sure. Mine didn't change.
