Polyurethrane and silicone

Hi,
I want to revarnish the interier of a boat which has been polished with Mr Sheen this I believe contains silicone. I have already striped a small panel with a heat gun, sanded and varnished. I found the polyurethane won't absorb in to the grain.
Has anybody else experienced this problem and what can I do?

G'day Septima - One of the few things that'll take, should be Shellac (French Polish) Have used it in the past over silicon effected timber and then finished over it with lacquer. Should be able to use poly over it in the same manner.

There is a silicone wash you can buy. No idea where but would suggest a paint shop that deals with the Automotive trade. Not too sure how effective it is on timber though. If the surface has been stripped and the silicone is still present it is possible that the silicone was could compound the problem as it would drive the silicone into the timber.

I could be wrong though as I have never used it. This just seems to be simple reasoning for what may happen.

If you decide to go with shellac you need to use Dewaxed or Dewaxed White Shellac (http://www.ubeaut.com.au/dewaxed.html) otherwise the wax in the ordinary shellac could also stop the poly from sticking.

You need clean it with "Prepwash" its a dewaxer/desiliconer they use on cars before any repair work.
With silicon slop it on with a rag wait a couple seconds then wipe off with a clean rag before it evaporates, with wax it just dissolves then evaporates it!
