Wipe on Poly - Where to get some

G'day Guys and Gals,

I'm looking for a commercially available Wipe on Polly... I dont really want to go down the home brew method quite yet.

I've been told that the one produced by Minwax is meant to be great. But I can't seem to find it anywhere.. Or any other make of wipe on poly for that matter.

So my question is simple.... Where in Perth WA can I buy some ??

I've already asked my local Bunnings and they just gave me that stupid "Whats this twat talking about look" and said they don't have it, havn't heard of it so can't get it.

And the couple of other local smaller hardware store chains said they'd heard of it but dont know where to get it from...

But I'll send your bloke a message and see where that leads me...

Bunnings used to sell Minwax wipe on poly. Most places have sold out but it may still be available from old stocks in other areas. I know Fyshwick (which doesn't help you) still has a few cans on the shelf.

G'day,
I asked at Bunnies in Hobart if they were still going to stock it. The answer YES it is a stock item.
Look in the paint dept and if they can't help you ask to speak to their special orders person.

As for the home made recipe it is very simple and cheaper than Minwax.
2 Parts polyurethane
3 Parts Turps,
It works better than the comercial product.

From what I can work out, there is little difference between "wipe on poly" and the product known as Scandinavian oil. Can anyone throw some light on this subject?

I don't think there is a standard definition of Scandinavian (or Danish) Oil. Usually a mixture of various other finish oils. Sometimes Scandinavian has no polyurethane while Danish usually does.

Personally, I've become a fan of the Maloof mixture, which is 1/3 tung oil, 1/3 boiled linseed oil, and 1/3 polyurethane. Mix up what you need, wipes on easily, dries quickly, odor doesn't drive the neighbors out of the street, etc etc. Biggest challenge is finding pure tung oil.

From not knowing what I was talking about last week, I've just taken a trip to my local Bunnings (Mindarie) and to my suprise sitting on the shelf were about 10 cans of Minwax wipe on poly in the gloss, plus another half dozen or so in the satin plus they also had the furniture restorer..

Looks like they might be going to keep some instock again !
