View Full Version : Bunnies dumps Minwax wipe-on poly

In recent years I have been buying Minwax wipe-on poly from Bunnies. It was usually hard to find on their shelves, since they didn't put it with other wood finishes. Yesterday I went looking for another tin, and they said they had never heard of it, despite the fact that I bought some there about six months ago. I wonder if there are any other suppliers.

I was wondering the same. Last time I saw it at Bunnings there was only 1 tin left.

Would you like members to check their local bunnies for "old stock"

Are you desperate enough to pay postage on top of the purchase price?

Rocker

Mat,

No; I have used some gel polyurethane instead on my current project instead.

Has anyone made their own wipe on poly?
How successful is it?

I have seen recipes that simply mix polyurethane with mineral spirits (Mineral Turps perhaps) in ratios of 60-75% polyurethane and the 40-25% mineral spirits.

Here is one site that talks about it
http://www.wadsnet.com/~dtenney/make_your_own_wood_finish.htm

What else is available in wipe-on varnishes?

Bunnings have taken a grip on the hardware market and now they are restricting what we have access to (triton, gmc, minwax, etc) What next?

Got the last tin at newcastle bunnies about a year ago , as for never hearing of it that is no surprise, went in yesterday to try to get some replacement sanding sleves for the ryobi spindle sander , (as bunnies will be the sole agent for ryobi after september,) and the friendly helpfull expert in the power tool section asked me what they were for ( i took the old packaging in ) he had never seen or heard of a oscilating spindle sander and of course had no stock , he then had to ask two others until he found a trained bunnies expert who even knew what one was
they just don't get any better

I think that Bunnys is getting rid of a number of lines. I have noticed that a couple of lines are no longer on their shelves. The last item I have been trying to get is the Bosch 130mm buffing pad that connects to the ROS via velcro backing. The staff don't even know what I am talking about despite the fact that my last supply came from Bunnings. By the way, Bosch don't answer email from thier own web site.

Well! There are two tins of it at Scorsby Bunnies.:oo: Satin and gloss. Should I race in and buy it? They have a funny range of stuff. And the staff just go "oh that's what you use." As if fine wood working doesn't exist. and other shops doesn't exist.

I wouldn'y worry too much
equal parts of poly, linseed oil and turps makes a nice rub on finish

Just went over to Bunnys at Northmead (North Parramatta) and stocked up on satin, Still several tins left, plenty of gloss. Asked at the counter if the line is being dropped. The code at the register indicates that it is still a stock item. There are two other codes for items being discontinued. So who knows????:C

Had to got to Bunnies Broadmeadows this afternoon.

They have 4 tins of Satin and 2 Gloss.

At checkout, they are asking for postcodes - something to do with new stores and comparison with last year although I do not remember being asked at any other time.

Tell 'em it's none of their business.:((

Checked out Thornleigh for casting resin - claimed they'd never heard of it, even though I'd seen it there about a year ago.
They did have 'fibreglass resin', but no hardner/catalyst.

Just remember guys and gals it does have a shelf life so stockpiling it is not a good idea unless you use it regularly.

No, more fun to give your postcode as 9999, then they look dumbfounded and ask where that is! My answer? "can't tell you under our very strict privacy laws:rolleyes:".

Sometimes it is nice to get your own back, I notice more and more shops are doing this sort of "survey", not just Bunnings.

Mitre 10 Mega in Ringwood started doing that a year or so ago and not long after they closed down!

I got 2 tins of gloss on the weekend from Bunnings Campbelltown (NSW), they had the new plastic top not the wretched childproof, adultproof, open proof and poorly sealing screw top.
There was gloss and satin still on the shelf and appeared to be fairly new stock.

Ha ha ha ha, well said, Ive used 9389 for a long time and never been questioned. We probably should decide on a dummie postcode so they know that the inhabitants of the forum are watching them too......

The reason they do it is to determine the geograhical spread of the customers of each store. If there are clusters where people travel from and the demographics are right then it makes sense to open a store there. People are inherently lazy and will avoid travelling to far.

Ive noticed product line variations between Bunnies. Once again this makes sense if you want to ingrain yourself as a local home maker store. Barrel nuts for Ikea type furniture gets various stock levels in different locations.

Checked out Thornleigh

I was there 3 weeks ago. I found 2 Triton router bits. Great, knowing that they were on sale everywhere so I thought I would try my luck. I went up to this tools expert / helpful old bastard. Instead of finding out the prices like I asked him to, he said those router bits are the most expensive bits I could buy. What the hell did that mean?:(( I know it means “listen my little Chinese friend, they are too good for you. Go and get a box of GMC. By the way do you know how to use a router?” :((:((:((

I makes me bloody mad when I think about it.:((:((:((

I think this says a lot about the staff's general attitude towards the type of customers they have to deal with, ie people with no idea......'oh, that's nice honey, I wonder what it does'?

Now, if you were to walk into Bunning wearing a Festool cap..... they would bowing to you!:D

AlexS,

I bought a tin of casting resin from one of the Penrith stores on Tuesday night (can't remember which one there's 2 there). The resin was with the fibreglass resin and the catalyst they kept under the paint counter. I'm assuming because it gets knocked off or something. The hard part's trying to find someone to get the catalyst from under the counter for you..... :~

Some bang up-to-date info....our NEW shiny mega bunnies just opened last week in Mittagong (NSW Southern Highlands), and they have both the gloss and satin Minwax Wipe-On Poly on the shelf. If it was not going to be stocked in future you'd wonder why a brand new store would keep it.

Amusingly, they have tubs of shellac flakes on the shelf in every size, but don't sell any suitable solvent to use with it.....grrrr. Do I still need to head up to Carbatec to get industrial grade metho for shellac??? The 'Diggers' stuff sold at bunnies says 95% metho on the label.:((

I have to admit that I dislike the practice of retailers asking for the postcode and usually give them a made up one.
I was just searching, and have decided that I reside in 2832, NSW, "COME BY CHANCE"

And for the latest on the Minwax Wipe on Poly
... went into Bunnings Epping (Vic) today and
they had four tins of satin and two of gloss (now one).

The attendant in the paint section claimed that it
is a regular item and there are no indicators to show
it will be a discontinued item.

A few months ago i bought all they had at the Gosford Store. The tins had been there a while and where rusted on top!
Back there today and they've not been replaced... Kotatra is not far for my father, I might get him to shoot across.

I believe this is a Sales Rep problem... (inconsistancies in stock levels that is). As I understand it, bunnings does not buy any of their stock untill it is sold??? (hearsay) but instead stock levels are kept up by the suppliers. if the rep isn't visiting for a few weeks it may be a while before stock returns.
I bought a box of pryda conectors (10 pairs) the 10 pairs a each packed indiviually and displayed in a other box. I took the whole box to the counter and the very nice sales lady took them all out of the box and put them on the counter. I asked if i could have the box to kep them in, she said no "the reps like to re-use them"...

This is also why it's also very easy to return items to the big B. If you return an item to The Lumber Bunker, we lose! as it's our Item, our captial thats invested. We don't what you back (for returns) so we get it right first time!

Some time ago I was chasing minwax tung oil. I was referred by minwax USA to their australian distributor who offered to sell me some direct since they don't have a "proper" retail outlet in brisbane.

Just an option if your bent on the minwax product. At least you'd know it was fresh. I thought the service was pretty good.

If you find it at bunnings have a look at the label it will have a letter on the label eg ( S,M,W D) if it is any of first ones it is a stock line if it is a D it is a deleted line and will only be on shelf until sold out if you wont me to see its status give me the f/l number also on label as you can see i work at bunnings. From not knowing what I was talking about last week when I went looking for the stuff, I've just taken a trip to my local Bunnings (Mindarie) and to my suprise sitting on the shelf were about 10 cans of Minwax wipe on poly in the gloss, plus another half dozen or so in the satin plus they also had the furniture restorer..

Looks like they might be going to keep some instock again !

The cans all looked brand new, no rusting or denting or even any dust on top.

Plenty at Bunnings, Browns Plains. Looks like new stock too. They have the gloss and the satin finish. I counted 5 cans of each. They also have another minwax product that removes old finishes and had quite a few of these too so it would appear that bunnings are not dumping these products.

Well I was in Bunnings in Darwin this week and lo and behold a full stock of Minwax has appeared on the shelf .
After a year of checking every visit I finally got my hands on some ,I bought a can of satin and one of gloss.
I asked the attendant how long they had it in stock she said 4 days and it will be a stock item .
The distributor is Bondall here in Australia .
Now I just got to make something to use it on.

Kev.
