Electric fence

G'day ppl,
Has anyone hereabouts
built their own ELECTRIC FENCE?

I'm thinking the one with:-
Car Coil,
Capacitor....................Condensor to some
12Volt DC relay

What else......Indication light?
on the 12V side

Looking for parts used, and HELP!.....:D

Ivan, I did something similar about 30 years ago for an interim measure, using an old mower coil and 3 volts to drive it, 12 volts to run the relay and simple control board for the relay. Lasted ten minutes before it burnt out the relay contacts due to overcurrent.

However as an electonic/communication engineer I am very loathe to support the idea now as there are now enforcable standards relating to voltages, currents they can supply, pulse widths, and repitition rates for this type of thing, and use of automotive ignition components is, I recall, a big no no.

There was a design in Silicon Chip magazine 3 to 5 years ago, and kits were available in electronics stores last time I looked for other kits.
This design is a bit complicated but if built by a moderately competent hobbyist should comply with the prevailing standards.

How would a indicator flasher can and a coil go at giving you intermitant spark.

I wouldn't.

If you build one and some one gets hurt and what you built does not meet the required standards then you could be on criminal charges.

Safer to buy one then you can always blame the manufacturer.

DaveG is right. Better to go for a proper unit.
Why not look on ebay for a second hand one. I had a bit of a search and found a few there. Might be the best option.

I built a fence energiser based on this design (sorry can't find a direct link to the pdf, but do a search on "Electric Fence Charger and Time Machine.pdf" and you can find a torrent) and had it running for many years. I don't believe it was any more dangerous than any commercial model (I've been zapped by both, many times).

However, having said that, unless you enjoy fiddling with that sort of stuff, it is probably easier (and not too expensive) to buy a second hand commercial model (which is what I am using now).

They like it even less if it is wired, but alas that is also in breach of the standards.
