I have bought the missus a new electric oven / cooktop . Now the cooktop is smaller than the existing one so we've decided to buy new benchtops as well which i could easily install :doh:. My question is should i install the benchtops now and then get an electrician to wire it the new appliances up or is it easier to get a kitchen guy to come and install the lot in one go seeing as i would need to disconnect the old hard-wired cooktop to install the benchtop anyway ? simple L shaped kitchen .will the sparky cut the stove hole etc in the timber benchtop for us or do we do need to do it before we get him out? :? sounds all silly but what is the best chain of process here

What an installer would do is (after the old cook top has been disconnected) is remove the old top, test fit the new one and make any adjustments to the fit.

He/she would then mark out and cut the hole for the cooktop before the bench is fitted - it is easier to do before fitting and allows this to take place outside/in the garage if required...a lot less mess in your kitchen.

The new top is then fitted in place, and the electrician comes out and fixes it off.

I don't recommend fixing the top and then cutting the hole - besides being messy it can get very difficult cutting the back edge if it is close to a wall.

As an electrician I would prefer that the hole be cut and ready for me to install. Although i would, and have, cut the hole I would rather not mess with someones new bench top.

that sounds like you are not sure of your capabilities with cutting the hole
