View Full Version : Floor tiling over tiling

I have been told that it is possible to tile over existing tiles, without having to remove them

I have a bathroom and laundry floor tiled in very strong colours, that are not restful to my soul.

Is tiling over tiling a job for an amateur, or should it be left to the professionals?

Removing the existing tiles would be a pain because there are toilets, vanities etc, and because the tiles are on a bed of mortar over 20 mm thick (maybe to get fall to the wastes)

Any help greatly appreciated

Mark

Hi again, mate.

If the current tiles are well stuck, should work OK if a couple of other things:

The change in floor height won't cause dramas
You use an underlayment between the layers of tiles (like Ditra) to give a flat surface
Your floor can stand the additional weight (on a slab, no worries; over stumps, better check your joists)

Thanks Bob,

Yes, its a slab.

No, the height wont be a problem, except toilet and vanity will be effectively lower.

Does one need to prepare the existing tiles before laying the cement for the Ditra?

I Googled Ditra, and saw an interesting video about it on U-tube
