Special Shower Heads for use with Instantaneous Gas Water Heaters?...

Dear Everyone,

In a previous thread that I started on the subject of Instantaneous HWS, it became evident fairly quickly that problems can be encountered with them where the amount of hot water being sought from them was somewhat low - such as when trying to take a slightly warm shower through a WELS-restricted Shower Rose in the middle of summer when the cold water already had a bit of extra temperature to it. The problem was that the amount of hot water being sought could quite often be below the "Minimum Flow Rate" required for activation of the heating process inside the units. The result - either cold showers or hot showers, but not necessarily warm showers...

One of the respondents in that thread seemed to think that one of the manufacturers was now doing a special Shower Rose that was designed for use with Instantaneous Gas heaters, presumably with the purpose of getting around the above-mentioned problem. Hard to see how it could without being electronic and expensive, but I'd very much like to see what was being offered anyway...

So, has anyone seen or heard about these new types of Shower Roses that are specifically designed for use with Instantaneous Gas HWS? The brand name would obviously be good to know...

Here we would just remove the thing that looks like a very thick washer with multiple holes in it. Usually it is just inside the swivel connector that attaches to the goose neck that extends out of the wall.

A bit of masking tape around the swivel connector and an adjustable wrench are the only tools that you'll need.

Yep, that's pretty much what we concluded down in the other thread Rich, but I'm still interested in hearing about these special units though...

I made inquieres at Tradelink after reading the thread, the answer was "never heard of them"

Yeah, I get that a lot too, China...

None of the Plumbing outlets seem to have heard about the said "Minimum Flow Rate" problem with the Instantaneous heaters either (even though they are well and truly actual, as verified in the above-mentioned thread)

But I think the brand to which the respondent in the previous thread must have been referring was "Con-Serv". I talked to their technical chap this afternoon - heck of a nice bloke. He knew about the whole issue in full detail - far greater than what any of the technical dorks at the various HWS manufacturers that I have spoken to did. He knew the ambient in-ground water temperatures for different parts of Australia, minimum flow rates for heaters from 5 years ago - everything (by contrast, most of the guys at the plumbing outlets don't seem to know much more than what time the bluddy Pie Truck is turning up. As for the token Blond Bimbo in the showroom - she knows even less, since the Capuccino Van isn't doing the rounds past the shop yet...)

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that their Shower Heads aren't magic in any way, but you can replace the 9L restrictor in them with a 12L version if the problem does rear it's head where you are...
