Due to the 5 star rating requirement for new homes we are required to install an underground rainwater tank connected to the toilets. The water is not clear but yellowy :oo: and it looks like the toilet has not been flushed properly. How do I improve the water quality? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/help.

Does the tank have a cloth bag to filter the incoming water? If so a good clean wouldnt go astray. I would also suggest pumping the tank dry and giving it a good clean, provided you have a towns water back up, which you should.

The yellow is likely colour leached from leaves/dirt in your gutters
drop one of those blue disinfector doovies in the cistern, then the loo water will be blue

Funny that the water is yellow. Our tank (above ground) is also connected to the toilets and the water is perfectly clear. If we get a bit of rain, the water sometimes gets a bit cloudy, but never yellow.
How long has the tank been installed? Just wondering because a mate had a tank fitted up, and connected to the toilets, and once it was finished they filled it from a water tanker.
The problem was, I think the tanker had obtained the water from a local creek.
