Hi everyone,

I am after some large bits of styrofoam, but really have no idea where to get it. I am after bits about min. 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m

I'm in Brisbane.

Any ideas?

Thanks :U
Michelle.

Hi Michelle,
Try a Builder's Supplier and ask for Waffle Pods. As far as I can see these are large polystyrene blocks that are used to reduce the amount of concrete in a house slab but still maintain the thickness. Google "Waffle Pods" and you will find a lot of information.

The only problem with waffle pods is that they are not solid. Look under polystyrene in the yellow pages.

michelle2008 Have you tried the yellow pages under "polystyrene products" we have several supliers in SA. They are large peices if you are lpaning on shaping them you need to ask for the ridged variety the manufacturers will know, it is what artists use to make sculptures in has a much finer grain

I've bought large (2500x600x100) blocks of quality polystyrene (LB grade- fine & dense, blue, suitable for shaping for fibreglass sheathing, or originals for metal casting) from the Dow Styrofoam supplier in Sydney. They are:
Aerodynamic Developments (Mfg) P/L
12 Donald St. (PO Box 272)
Guildford NSW 2161
Fax 02 9892 1440
Tel 02 9632 3322

Its a completely different species than your standard white crumbling stuff, and in a strange way is nice to work with! I think its similar to surfboard core. Great finish, can even be finished with auto spray putty before final sanding. Relatively expensive to buy from there if you're in Qld, as the blocks are fragile and need to be top loaded, but I have failed to find a closer supplier. Paid around $150/block with freight, a couple of years ago. Standard thicknesses are 75, 80, 100 mm.

Hope that helps.:)
