Greetings from Adelaide. I am a "first time postee!".
I recently bought the U-Beaut Dewaxed White Shellac to try out. It states that I should mix it with 100% Industrial Methylated Spirits.
But can I obtain any in Adelaide? Nupe!!!
I was hoping someone can tell me more about this product.
Does it come under a different name?
Does anyone know if and where in Adelaide I may be able to get some?
Or can this be ordered from interstate?
Every one I have spoken to here does not know what it is and the only methylated spirits available appears to be labelled as 96% ethanol. (commonest brand of Diggers).
I would be grateful for any help. Thanks.

It's usually held by good paint shops, or else look for a specialist wood finishing place.
Otherwise drop in on a French polisher and ask if you can buy some.
Good luck,
Ern

G'day Sasha,
Take a trip out to Haymes Paints, 224 Main North Rd, Prospect. You will find everything you need plus friendly advice and service. Speak to Robyn Douglas if you can.

Any halfway decent paint shop should have it. The most common name is Industrial Methylated Spirits other names are 100% IMS, and Ethanol.
It isn't actually 100% pure it's something like 99.04% pure as it has about .06 % denaturant included to make it unpalatable.
You don't necessarily have to use the pure stuff, but you will get better result if you do.
You might also have luck getting it at smaller hardware shops rather than the bigger ones. Some Mitre 10's have it and others will give you the blank stare.
Hope this helps.

Well done Brian. I was writing while you were posting.
Didn't know Haymes were in SA. You are right they always stock it or will get it in for you. A great company to deal with and one of the few independant paint manufacturers who haven't been swallowed up by the big international conglomerates.

'morning Neil,
Yep, you've hit the proverbial on the head. Staff that really know the industry and their product - and not just reading the label.
Haymes have a wholesale/retail outlet in the northern subs, 'bout 10 mins from the Adelaide CBD.
Cheers
Brian

Thanks a lot everyone.
Haymes certainly the man!
I had no trouble at all in getting 100% methylated spirits from them.
I hadn't really noticed them before but I will definately be visiting again.

Seems to be a missing 0.9% there somewhere :D

I found the pre-historic post in a google search but already happened to be a member of WWF! I'm not worried about the 1% or less that is a denaturing additive. I'm still interested if anyone knows how much a litre costs now days of the 99.something% Metho? If it's not too expensive I'll try to track it down. Any tips for a good value source in Canberra?
Cheers Smokey.

Hi Smokey,
Recently I got some more metho from Haymes. I can't remember the exact prices but I think he quoted for the 1 litre approx $7.50. Cheaper if you buy a 4 litre container approx $24.00.
