We have just put down a great cypress pine floor and will sand it today. We are considering putting a darker stain on it before varnishing - any advise re products to use would be appreciated for both stain and varnish - has to be fairly hard wearing. so many products out there! cheers  Samwise

Sam, I had a Cypress Pine floor some years back and found that when finished it was darker than I had thought it would be. Don't forget all finishes will darken timber. To get an idea, wet a typical section and see how it looks.
As for the type o f finish I like Feast Watson products, but there are many good ones out there.

Samwise, I've used polysol [Solver SA] high gloss hardwearing. But cypress has a wild character and at least on external work a lot of the finishes end up with a overbearing orange colour. The trick is in the stain [pre sealing] I like to flatten out cypress with 1/4 stength Nutmeg, Cedar or Cinnamon type colour cuts down the white sections & blends with the brown. Could even out the floors appearance.
