Steel Fence Posts

Hi,

I am new to this forum so please have mercy upon me if this topic has been done to death.

Because our current hardwood dividing fences have been eaten up by termites, I wish to use steel posts for the replacement fences.

My strong prefence was to use hot-galvanised 65 x 65 x 3 SHS steel posts but the steel merchants are not interested in supplying hot gal steel. Depending on whom I talk to, I can buy Allgal, Duragal and Supagal steel but not hot-gal at least not at an affordable price.

Has anyone experience with these alternatives and can anyone give any idea how long they will last set in concrete exposed to Brisbane soils and weather?

I'm not sure about the others (but I would assume they are the same), but Duragal is actually hot dipped galvanised in-line (during production). So other than where the gal has been removed (welding, drilling or cutting), it should last a similar amount of time to post that has been "post production" hot dipped.

I think you'll find the benefit of hot dipped is not worth the added expense.

I have used duragal posts on our house boundaries and they are unchanged after 5 years. I am no expert since never heard of allgal or supagal. If you mount them in concrete and dome the top of the concrete it should be fine. You could get posts hotdip gal yourself if you want.

As Vernon says it probably isn't worth the cost, but if you wanted to go that way you could get them cut from black steel and take them to a galvanising works and have the hot dipped.

If you are near the coast it may be worth doing otherwise go the Duragal. That is all the fencing companies use for their posts.
