I am about to have my first go at French Polishing. I have Neil's book!
I am going to use northern Silky Oak from Aus-slab ( he doesn't know I am going to order yet!!!!!), so my question is:
What difference will the various types of shellac ( white, orange blah blah blah) make to appearance of the timber. That is, will the orange make the finish look orange? Therefore what colour would the white make the timber look?
I hope my question is clear???

Orange shellac won't turn your piece orange; it will add a brown tone. Blonde shouldn't darken it more than water would.

Silky oak varies from cream to mid brown, so you decide how much darkening you want and choose accordingly.

I've had good results on silky oak with sanding sealer and wax, adequate with Organoil, and lousy with Arboroil. Haven't tried shellac.

Cheers,
