Howdy, I'm new on this and frankly, know very little about woodwork or DIY in general, but I am renovating an old house on a budget, so will have to learn if I am to afford to do anything!

Now for my question: I'd like to replace the ugly front door with something more aesthetically pleasing and I have been looking on ebay for some inspiration. However, it seems that the sizes of doors are quite different to my door. The dimensions of my door are H 2001 W: 815. Most doors are something around 2040 - 2070 high, so I am thinking that it would be an awful lot of wood to remove to get it to fit!

Can anyone suggest what I can do about this? I had the option of buying an MDF door (which i suppose i could have cut to any size and it wouldn't have mattered) but what is the general ballpark re sizing of doors and how much you can logically plane back to fit?
THanks!! :2tsup:

Most doors only have about 5mm all around trimming allowance from memory (possibly a bit more at the bottom). Doors in concrete block houses are 2000 x 800 so you might be better off trying to get one of these and planting a bit extra on.

The standard door size id 2040mm in height and 820mm wide. Your options are
a) either go to the local H/W store and get then m to order a specially made door or
b) buy a solid wood door which allows you to trim to size but make sure that you take equal amounts of each side.

Hope this helps

Hi you have a couple of options as I see it, a standard door is 820 x 2040 your door is 2000 x 815 all you need to do is buy a solid door, on most of these the top and bottom styles are around the 25mm mark so youll need to rip 20mm of the top and 20 mm of the bottom you should be pretty right with 5mm on the top and bottom style. does the existing door fit snug because if not you can take a bit less off and are u considering using a door seal if so the rp4 storm seals really good but youll need to take off another 25mm of the bottom.

youll need to buzz back either side of the door to but only 2.5 mm per side OR easy enough just use your old door as a template and buzz back OR buzz 5 mm of hinge side again most doors have a 25 mm timber style on side to (both hinge and latch side)

I would just buy a standard 820 x 2040 door and make it fit not to hard if your confident with a plane and saw, hope this helps mate

..............a standard door is 820 x 2040...............

. Doors in concrete block houses are 2000 x 800...............

These are an "off the shelf" item and should be readily available.
