I have recently knocked down a couple of walls to open up a room and would like to square set when I replaster.
The Ceiling original joists are not very level and I have decided to batten and level before hanging ceiling plaster.
I am thinking of running a perimeter batten or timber around the room against the wall topplate and then fixing ceiling battens underdeath this to help keep battens to the same level and fixing to ceiling joists inbetween. On a previous ceiling i used rondo 301 with a 305 hanger thing.
I found the hangers to be quite expensive and would like to know if i could pack between the battens and the ceiling joist and screw through to fix.
Please find attached pic and any advice would be much appreciated.

The clips may appear expensive, but believe me they sure make up for it if your ceiling is up and down.

yes you can do it the way you propose but it is a lot harder and very frustrating if you want a truly level ceiling.
