I stumbled onto this table on ebay. It is close to the singularly most grotesque piece of furniture I've ever seen. Whadiya reckon, is it worth the money?

$5000 is cheap. I have seen uglier pieces for a lot more money.

Of course it is worth the money. It is art.

I don't like that sort of thing, but as Wongo says, it's art, so it follows that it will evoke strong aesthetic responses, mine is a strong Yuk.

BUT if it had already been slabbed, it wasn't the maker who wasted the burl (and you can buy it to reuse the slab!!!). The fact is that it is woodwork, even tho' I don't like it,so I voted is OK. But I think, I couldn't give a Rat's Ring for it expresses my view best.

Each to his own, not to my taste at all, but someone will probably love it, after all the constructor obviously loved it or he/she wouldnt have made it. (I guess a few would look at some of my stuff and say yuk:rolleyes:) .Looks too plastic coated.

How can one man have so much talent!?

I hate that style of "furniture" with a passion! It looks like a rather painfully formed cow pat!

These people really don’t have a clue. I mean who do they think they are kidding?

Still remember the bloke who thinks he can sell his coffee table for $2,000 - $3,000? What happened to his coffee table anyway?? Lets do a search...

Of course it is woodwork. It is made of wood.

But tell them the price son. Tell them the price.:D

Some people only look at the patterns and grain in the wood. To us, they mostly all look wonderful.

Some people like to see a thick transparent finish without knowing how simple it is to get such a finish.

Some people like the shape and colour. Personal taste.

Some people like the object because of it's geographical origin. It reminds them of happy times or of somewhere they can identify with, they can take part of this wonderful place home with them.

Some people like the craftmanship like the fine joinery etc.

Some people consider if it matches their other furniture and their home.

If I was judging I would compare the item with the criterior and assess it from there taking into account grain matching, finishing, style, craftmanship etc. It is possible I would award it a prize based on the criterior.

If I was buying (not likely) a coffee table I would walk past it. It doesn't match any of our other furniture and I don't personally like that style or finish.

So to Scott's question what is it worth? If it was exactly what I was looking for and I was unaware of anything similar and cheaper then I would buy it if I could afford it.

I did one similar (see silents thread link if u havnt already) the one I made is smaller than the big one in the ebay link, I dont mind that sort of stuff. but I woulndt have a house full of it.... ones enough... they tend to sell if you keep the price down to reasonable levels - I sold one simialr to the one in my thread for $400, i think thats fair... ish...

each to thier own...

I would say however that I wouldnt pay $5k for one...

if you dont like it dont buy it. simple. or fcku off i suppose...

Wood Borer
14th February 2008, 01:45 PM
Scott,

It is not as simple as saying it is crap or not crap as you well know you stirrer.

ss_11000 suggests it is art. Apart from the selection of the timber and the choice of finish I feel the person selling it had very little input into it's shape, colour and wonderful patterns. I am questioning whether something of beauty that naturally occurs can be called art.

I am of the opinion that art is the work of an artist as a form of expression rather than the work of someone who presents an object that has natural beauty with very little input from that person.

If you believe in God and think this is art, then God was the artist and the seller is the agent who packaged it and cops the big commission.

I still wouldn't take it if you gave it to me though.

It's not to my taste and it is certainly not worth $5,000, wouldn't even take a day to make, maybe he put one to many zero's on the price. After having seen the exhibition at Bungendore and the amount of work that has gone into their items no way.

There would have been a lot of nice pens in that slab:rolleyes:. I guess its worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I don't mind this style of table when it is executed properly but this looks very amaturish with little thought given to the aesthetics of the piece. An oil/wax finish would have been harder work on the natural edge but it would have softened the finish. For mine the slab is too thick which makes it look heavy, not physically heavy but it would dominate any area it was put into. Little to no thought was given to the legs and the base... do I need to go on? Good luck to the seller but IMHO its a monstrosity:doh:.

The execution is definitely not for me - but then again neither would 1000 pens made out of it be either, I'd prefer to see it used in in tool handles. OK the pen makers can have the scraps :D

Hey steady on there manoftalent,
I make my living out of gluing offcuts together in random order!!

To elevate this piece to a work of art
you would need to put it on a white box, shine some lights on it,
give it an ambiguous title (warriors in the void number 7)
and write an artist statement the length of a short novel
explaining that its not just a burl table but a metaphor for
the human condition yada yada yada

underfoot, if you can make a living from selling offcuts :2tsup: good on ya
as for a slab cut probably with a chainsaw ....stuck together with silly glue ...sprayed with poly ....and called art ?....I think I will pass on that one ......and go find a mid 18th century cabinet to gaze at ...I would at least get my monies worth knowing what it took to put it together....

All I can think of is....... what a waste of tools & time...sanding disc's and how it reflects on the more elegantly produced pieces.
But, who am I to evaluate, classify or standardize someone else's work...my taste lies in a total other dimension..."Country Cottage" .... and hey...I really actually believe I do nice work....but cant sell my stuff at a half that price...would like to though......Ok...you don't have to twist my arm....it's yours for $1000....lol....dreaming......oh, by the way top lifts up for compartment under the lid...sorry, no photo of that will update it tomorrow...cheers....
