thanks guys.
I checked out their site http://www.qasair.com.au/
although I find the site a little 'ambiguous' - ie couldnt really see any island hoods. But have contacted the closest retailer and waiting for some info..
anyone else care to offer anopinion on rangehoods? :shutup1:

There are some nice but expensive pop-up ones made by Smeg and Miele I believe. Prevents having a big hood hanging from the ceiling. I had the Smeg one in Sydney and it worked well. We did it because we had an open plan kitchen and 5m ceilings and a hood wasn't really an option.
Is your cooktop 900mm? as I think these are for 900mm cooktops.

Just checked websites and Smeg don't seem to have the one we bought any more.
Miele have a height adjustable one which is a bit flash.

Here's one from Parmco haven't heard of them but it's on the side rather than across the full width at the back like ours was.

Here's the rear version but it's $2700 for the 900mm one :o

Daren, Yes I have had one for about 12 months. The previous one I had was an Ilve - cost around 900 bucks. Was ok, but when using the indoor BBQ the cooking fumes would get out into the rest of the kitchen.
With the Qasair - nothing escapes. The Ilve air flow was about 750CM per hour the Qasair in 1900CM per hour and about half the noise of the Ilve.
The Qasairs aren't cheap - mine was about $2700 for the rangehood and about another $800 for the ducting. The only thing that dissappointed me was thinking $3500 was too much to spend and wasting $900 on the cheapie in the first place.

the cooktop will be 600 on an 1800mm island 800 deep.
I was thinking of having the big island hood (900 mm) as a centrepeice type thing. hadnt really contemplated the downdraft ones but I will look into it and give it some thought :)

mmm, sound advice. I geuss that rules out ebay then :B:doh:
the rep i spoke to about the quasair said that you have to use their ducting otherwise the warranty is void. she mentioned $2000ish for the hood and $1000 for ducting aswell.
So 3 grand or more for a quasair. hmmm maaaybe just out of the budget :C:~ hmm

hi Daren
i'm in the same boat as you .i have found a Euroart range hood that is very similar to the one you like it is made by one of the four major range hood companies but is made in there new factory in chinna so it is not a crazy price it is the
EUROART RH920SS Glass Top Canopy

3speed fan with timer
twin halogen lights
Temp safe glass
teflon coated metal blades

660mm flue extension
and it is siutable for re circulating or fully ducted .
for $700 without tinted glass or $850 with tinted .

you could try one of these. they also pop up out of the island, so you dont have the rangehood overhead.
http://www.casf.com.au/downdraft.htm
there is a rear riser, side riser and in bench model.
i just installed the 600mm in-wall version (since i dont have an island cooktop), which is permanently mounted in the back wall above the cooktop, rather than a pop up version, and it works brilliantly. you can actually see the steam getting sucked out of the pot and into the wall unit.
the pop up version uses the same motor, mounted above or below. for my purposes mine is mounted with duct runnning inside the wall to under the house, where the motor is mounted and easily accessible.
seriously they are brilliant, and i found it to be cheaper than an equivalent glass overhead rangehood. my 600mm in wall cost a total of about $750 including freight to Tasmania and all pipes and ducting.
the in bench pop up model is about the same price, though the riser ones are about double that!
take a look, i would recommend one.
to get info about them, call CASF on the 1800 number supplied on the page, and ask to talk to Yvette. she knows all the details.

hmm, looks good Rob. That is a wall mounted unit, the island ones seem to be a lot more expensive.
so there is only 4 major makers of rangehoods then ?

sorry i should have read your first post better.
one thing to consider if you go for a island rangehood is that they are a hell of a lot more expensive and from what i have been told the install price will really put you off them all that said i think if you get the right one they do look increadible .
got board and found this for you the specs sound O.K and the extra flue length is always handy .
