View Full Version : Woodies BBQ Gold Coast QLD

dai sensei

I think it is about time to have another BBQ in SEQ and it's the Gold Coast's turn I think. So I'll put up my hand.

Sunday 24th February 2008 say 10:30am onwards

BYO drinks, I'll provide the meat/bread/salads, open to offers for deserts.

Open to offers for demos, I could do some turning perhaps. If I have my slabbing rig up and running I could also do that, or if not, perhaps TJ can bring down his if he is free.

I assume Rocker will have another chair joint he wants tested :U

All welcome, including wives & kids. There is a pool and other goodies to entertain. Just rember this is a single blokes house, so don't expect much, I'm a slob :-.

Note to self - give shed and house a clean

Cheers

Great idea Neil.

I will see you tomorrow and hope I can convince my wife and daughters as to the benefits of these outings and see if they can lend their culinary expertise to balance my lack of wood working talent.

I had a great time at Tee Jays and appreciated the behind the scenes work of the ladies. I hope our Gold Coast girls will at least meet the bench mark that was set at Petrie otherwise you will all have to survive on " The mean burnt sausage that I can cook on a bar b que. "

Love to have you Sturdee, but Saturday means I'm in a big rush to get things ready and buy the produce. A lot of SEQers work Saturday also.

Any chance of calling in before or after your family thingy. You are more than welcome to call in on Saturday anyway, just the others wont be here.

Pencil me (and SWMBO) in for starters. I can bring more blunt tools for show and tell :p and probably manage a cake or a dessert.

I've been looking at the flotsam on the beaches the last couple of days. There's some pretty large unidentified trunks out there, I've wondered about picking up one or two for experimenting on but decided I'd get a hernia before I'd manage to move one. How do you go about moving trunks for a slabbing demo? Is the idea of recovering driftwood for slabbing realistic?

dai sensei
13th January 2008, 12:30 PM
I wouldn't bother with the driftwood, but that's me.

Big slabs come from big trees, and unless you have penty of room with big trucks and cranes for moving etc, most slabbing is done at the site where the tree falls.

I have a number of small logs here (300 to 500mm dia x 600 to 1800mm long) and a few burls for slabbing demos.

Ok good news and bad news:

Bad - my uncle died yesterday, he had cancer and it was expected (just a bit earlier than expected), so I am travelling to Melbourne tomorrow to support my mother.

Good - I'll be back Tuesday, in time for BBQ

Bad - I wont have time to put the finishing touches to my milling rig this weekend

Good - Weisyboy has offered to bring down his small rig to do a demo. TeeJay, could you also bring your rig (just the rig I have Stihl660 chainsaw) for possible larger logs

Bad - I have been concentrating on getting my mill finished and left the house/yard/shed tidying up till the last minute, and now :C:no:

Good - Hopefully I'll have Saturday to tidy up

Bad - I might have time to tidy up on Saturday :U

Good - The new BBQ is great and the pool looks good

Bad - I'll be away till next Tuesday so hopefully the pool will still look good:-

Good - should still be a great day :2tsup:

PS: I'm having trouble sending my contact details out, but be patient, they will get there

Weisyboy is bringing his saw and mill, so I don't think you need to bring yours anymore. I also have my saw/bars/chain/oil as back-up, and a half finished expandable mill (but should work if need be - aux oiler not finished though) and old ladder for rails.

Well the day was a blast.

First off was Weisyboy's slabbing demo. Sorry no photos, my camera was playing up and RuffyRustic's battery was flat :((

Then we had BBQ lunch. Yes that pav was amazing, tried to convince people it should be left in the fridge for me later, but with no luck. We did however leave the 2kg each of pasta and coleslaw salads in the fridge , guess what I'm eating for dinner for a while. Also some lovely pekan pies and cheeze cake, I'm still eating the left-overs of them :U.

By then my camera decided to work so we got a group shot outside with the slabs and shavings.
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/attachment.php?attachmentid=67903&stc=1&d=1203839822

Then we finished off the slabbing, whilst one neighbour complained :~, but all the noisy stuff was near enough to over anyway (after only 2 hours total anyway).

Then down to the shed for some wood turning demos. Toolin Around showed us how to use a Skew (not my favourite chisel) after sharpening it for me :-.
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/attachment.php?attachmentid=67905&stc=1&d=1203839822

and the spectators spilled out the door :p
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/attachment.php?attachmentid=67906&stc=1&d=1203839822

Then I turned a quick handle for a scratch awl, but again no photo sorry.

Then it was over to Teejay to demo his Domino.
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/attachment.php?attachmentid=67904&stc=1&d=1203839822

Then back to inside for drinks, show & tell (on items members had brought), a bit of swapping odds and ends, then more discussion on planes and other subjects.

What a day :2tsup:

Oh no, I just found that big box of chocolate macadamia nuts in the firdge - yum, thank you.

Oh Star, with those left over pecan pies, better make it +4 :U:U

Arrghh!! Anna's Chocolates!!! :( :U

Twas a wonderful day! Thank you Neil for inviting us to share a wonderful day together at your place. The BBQ was brilliant, the desserts to die for and I have to confess, I felt even more at home the minute I saw the chainsaw in the kitchen :;

Thank you Carl!

It was great to meet up with old friends and make new ones. I loved seeing how Carl got to work and slabbed that log. I couldn't believe how easy it can be when you have the right equipment, know how to use it and have the confidence to get in and go for it. :2tsup: I thoroughly enjoyed the day, the food, the demos and the great company.

I forgot to bring the usb camera cord with me today, so the photos I did manage to take will be available this evening.

cheers
Wendy

Carl's demo was really worthwhile. A simple but very effective little rig to do a tough job.:2tsup::2tsup:
Apprecisted the handmade planes that Toolinround showed us and the skew demo.:;:)
Didn't get to see the Domino effect!! ( can't afford one so not interested:D:D:D:p )

A number of woodies were asking what a panel raising plane was for. So I figured a couple pics was worth a few thousand words...

The first pic shows what i was trying to describe in how the plane rides along the wood and forms the profile. In the pic the left side of the plane rubs on the top of the panel and the right side rubs on the bench. When the plane "bottoms" out on both sides you're done. It's important that the panel is flat on the bench or you'll end up with some parts thinner than desired. You can see that the skewed blade works well on end grain also.

Pic two not much to say, it shows the final result.

Sorry Peter, but you were too good to miss with a pose like that :D :D

Carl - yes, it sure did smoke a bit, but it blew away pretty quickly.
