Hi,
Have a 1930's Californian Bungalow (double brick cavity)... It has horrible aluminium windows in it with completely rotten wooden frames. Anyway, i would like to replace them with original type timber windows (2 sash and 2 casement). I had a couple of guys (handymen) come round to quote but as usual never heard back from them. Is this the sort of job a window manufacturer would do or do i need a bricklayer or builder to do it? Anyone know someone in Perth (4km North from city) who might be able to help?
Thanks

I'm fairly sure this would be DIY-able providing they are the same size as those horrible aluminium windows.
Anyway, I don't really know what I'm talking about but I just wanted to congratulate you on doing what I think is 'the right thing' and replacing those ugly aluminium things with the real deal. Hope it goes well for you.
Cheers,
Lotte

So it sounds like originally there were timber windows and for whatever reason (rot, termites) the windows were replaced with aluminium windows, but utilising the original timber framing around the brick opening. Yes/No?
You need to contact a Joinery Workshop/s who make and or specialise in making timber window and door frames. They are around, check the yellow pages. And be sitting down when you get the price.

My real problem I guess is that the brickwork is pretty crappy around the windows and this along with the lintels will need attention/replacement. I also believe that the sash windows will need 'bricking in'. Getting someone to do it all is proving impossible. I'm all DIY'd out and can't bring myself to do any these days....

I can sympathise with you flashman... where do you start and where do you finish.
Ya know what I did? I demolished our 50's style house that we had lived in for the past 18yrs and have Owner Built (in the true sense) a brand new house.

Oh my God, don't say that. I've only just owner built a large extension to the back of the house. Not sure I could go through that again.....
