I have some Atco Possum transformers to wire up to some downlights.
My question is : On the side where the 240v wires go in, does it matter which side the red and the black wire go in?

Not to the fully qualified electrician who is wiring it. He will know.

Black & Red wiring?? How old is the house? As the lads said above, if you have to ask this question, you should have an electrician wire them up.

It is best to leave the pessimism to the qualified electricians:D . "Black and Red wiring" is quite common in building wiring - even new ones:).
And to the original question - No, but it is illegal to work on fixed wiring without the required license. It would be better to have the original light wiring terminated by an electrician to a socket so that the down light transformer can be plugged in.
