Advice for rank beginner

Would some patient person consider the following question. I have made a bookcase with sStained pine and used estapol as the cover. I sanded with 800 wet & dry (with water) between coats-and intended this for the top coat. What is the best way to finish? I have in mind 0000 steel wool with wax but have not used this before.

I've just finished a Jarrah entertainment unit and was thinking of using a spray lacquer to finish it. I've not used it before, and am not sure what to use. I'm thinking of a Mirotone lacquer. I have a compressor and a good spray gun, as well as a low pressure gun and an electric gun. Which way would you go? I've put too much effort into building this entertainment unit without stuffing it up in the finishing phase. Any suggestions?

Followup question:
I have read in a wwodworking text book (dated 1996) that polyuethane (and 'varnish') should be left to cure for 3 weeks before finishing which, I assume following your comment, just means the final sanding. On the other hand the tin (Wattyl Estapol) says leave minimum 8 hours between coats. Should I wait 3 weeks to finish (or when I get the Polishers Handbook - which I shall - will it all be revealed.

all I use is a CIG handysprayer, I find it easier to use than the High Pressure gun on my compressor and the electric gun I have is about as useful as a bacon sanger to Moshe Dayan!

I think it is the same as the old Little Beaver which run a fan blower and a 1 1/2" hose to the gun. Low pressure and useful for blowing spiders out of the corners of the workshop without the spray unit attached.
Cost just over a hundred bucks if this is the same unit.
