Valley Gutters

Hi guys,
Everytime there is a severe storm,the valley gutter in my tile roof overflows-unfortunately into the roof,fills the gap between the cornice and the ceiling and diverts lots of water around the room.
Any ideas?:confused:

Micko,
Are you sure it's the valley that's overflowing and not some of your roof tiles that are leaking/letting the water in.
Usually its very unusual for the valley itself to leak unless it has been put in real dodgy.

Reading your post again is it the actual Valley itself you say that's leaking or is it the gutter at the bottom of the valley

I beleive the valley is overflowing into the roof.Its on a low part of the roof which I can't see from inside.After work I will lift some tiles around the valley and see if there is any damage.It is not a very steep valley and it's where an extra room was added on.
Maybe there is some dodgy work preventing the water from escaping quick enough and it may be backing up.
I'll let you know what I find.What does water do to newplasterboard.?I mopped up as quick as possible and the heat within the roof should dry it out.The insulation absorbed lots of water and I have removed this.

Sounds a bit dodgy - there should be enough fall (slope) for the water to run away naturally without going under and there shouldn't be anything restricting it's downward flow - there should also be a small lip on each side of the metal valley to stop water from going into your roofspace - let us know how you get on when you lift some of the tiles. A couple of pics could help too.

Regarding the plasterboard - it and water do not go well together at all - all you can do is hope for the best and that you got it before the water has leeched into it. Just keep an eye on it you maybe lucky and get away with it. If not then will need replacing.

Sounds like the new bit of valley has been put in without enough fall to carry the water away. Normally the pitch of the roof is much steeper than that of the valley, so there's nowhere else for the water to go.

If your gutters are not coping with the volume of water, then it might back up. Or if the valley is actually flat in places, it might be ponding and finding a nail/screw hole somewhere.

Might be hard to fix, perhaps it needs to be replaced with a box gutter.

Hi guys,
I have had a quick look at the valley after removing some tiles
As Big Pete said there is a small lip on each side of the metal valleyto stop water from going into your roofspace.This was completely flattened on one side for about the last foot.Ithink also my gutter is inadequate and the water is backing up hitting the flattened lip on one side of the metal valley and going straight in the roof dropping on the gap in my new cornice and flooding the room.
I guess it's always been like that as it's always damp under the house.I guess the water was running down the cavity.
Time will tell,I will have to wait until the next storm to see if it's fixed.

Hope you have fixed it Mick.

Let us know how your get on with the next storm/rains. Keep an eye on that plasterboard etc though as if it has been doing it for a while may have a few probs there when it's all dried out finally.
