With us older members rabbiting on about the good ol days
I thought we could share some of the cullenary delights served up 1940-1960

Ill start with an old war time recipe that even my kids love ew

corned beef stew

one can of corned beef( none of that fresh muck)
2 lbs of king edward spuds
one large onion
salt n pepper
quater pint of water

peel and slice all ingredients
bung them in a pan in layers
put on lid and boil away
when spuds are soft
dump it on a plate and mash

serve with frozen peas (cooked)
actually tastes great

It does belong in the cooking forum :rolleyes: it is a recipe after all

Tatie hash have it regularly in winter yum or you can turn it into cornedbeef pie

I just dump the taties in boil em till just tender then add the cornedbeef
a little tomate sauce and english mustard and fresh buttered bread on the side.

That used to be a regular meal for us in winter with dollops of HP sauce on.
We used to call it panackelty. !!!!!!
Bubble and squeak was spuds and cabbage mashed with loads of pepper and salt on.

It can be haute cuisine - according to my Mum, the leading hotel in Perth in the 1950s (the Esplanade) served it with everything for breakfast and it was magnificent.

PS

OK I know I was born in 1961 and so don't count as a survivor ..

WRONG

Whoops,
I'm disagreeing with another Moderator:C:doh::doh:

Bubble and Squeak, to me and the Kiddlettes;
was near any boiled Vegetables, left over.

They were then put in the Sandwich press, Browned off,
An EGG or 2 scrambled and dribbled over the Dry-Frying Veges,
when the egg was near cooked
Cheese - Matured - was grated over that.

That's how I got the Kids to eat Veges:B:B

Slowly reduced the Egg and Cheese:o

Eventually the kids would ask for excess veges to be cooked so that they would get B&S:roll:

If I had a choice I would eat the recipe presented by "The Two Fat Ladies".....lard & lard upon left over roast vegies mashed and cooked until it actually bubbled & squeaked.
I can feel my arteries hardening already
