View Full Version : Gloss or Matte finish for Jarrah & Tassie Oak Flooring?

We've just put gorgeous Jarrah floorboards down our hallway. Normally I don't like gloss finishes but I think with the darker wood, and it being a hallway, gloss may reflect more light and look a bit brighter.

I've been warned off Jarrah for the dust it shows but love it so much, I don't care! I have also been told gloss will show the dust more than matte.

Any opinions?

We have also put Tassie Oak floorboards (recycled) in our downstairs area (dining/lounge) and I'm not sure what is best for that either.

Would love to hear what you've used.

Thanks!

Satin? Scratches will stand out more in gloss as will dust.

Gloss looks good on Jarrah.

I think it's a matter of preference which varies from person to person & country to country. Some of my overseas friends feel that glossy looks cheap while over here, gloss is more highly regarded. I personally find a very matt finish gives a more refined classy look but I believe I'm in the minority.

Thanks guys. I think Satin is a good suggestion - an in-between/compromise I guess between the 2.

Appreciate your replies!

Now it's time to go home and clean the nasty film of dust that is covering EVERYTHING in the house!
