Repairing render to internal brick wall

Hi All,

I've recently moved into a "new" house - a 100 year old terrace in inner Sydney. I removed some plastic wall plugs, planning to fill the holes and paint. As careful as I was, some render came away from some of the holes (maybe 1-2 square cms in each case, to a max. depth of maybe 3-4 mm). :(

Is it better to use a commercially available plastic filler for the drill holes and the "craters", or do I need to mix up some render to match the original? If I need to use render, what is a good mix? Any other hints?

Polyfilla will be the easiest for you to use

if you mix render and apply it not really worth the bother unless you are doing more than your craters - am also assuming the surface is a plaster type surface in which case you're going to have to go over it with some sort of plaster type filler to try and match surfaces - i.e. render will have a coarser finish than plaster (although some acrylic renders have a smoother finish)

guess another question to ask you is if the plugs pulled out a crater of render is the surrounding render around the hole 'sound' - knock it with a back of screw driver or your knuckle and see if there are any drummy sounds - if so you might need to remove more than your crater in which case rendering might be an option - if you are not doing any major reno's probably not worth your while

guess it depends how far you want to go

anyways in answer to your question probably best to keep it simple and go for a ready mixed filler as tools suggested

Thanks for the replies guys. I only had a problem with removing two of six wall plugs and the rest of the wall is very sound so I'll go with the polyfilla.

Hi, I have an art deco (English Modern) house and one of the rooms has a textured solid plaster finish applied to the brick work. I've had heaps of renderers and diy's have a look at it and none of them are confident in patching the walls up with the same - or similar - textured result. I know we can use poly-filla for smooth finish, but this wall has a runny/streaky pattern on the walls and I have no idea how they achieved that affect in the past - if I knew how they did it I would have a crack at it myself. I've been looking for books or guides on the old ways of doing textured render to internal brick walls. If anyone can guide me to how to do this, or knows some old guy or someone who's knows this art who is in Melbourne, Victoria, please let me know. thank you - Harry
